*11/09/00: This is a partially completed files page. The old one was
so bad I felt the need to replace it, even if this page isn't done yet.
The usual applies: if you know of any useful files that should be included
here,
.
This should be "utilities" page as it pretty much concentrates
solely on programs
I want to make the TweakCentral files page a place where you can grab
what you need quickly.
DriversHQ thank you Vidar
Helgason
A site with links to manufacturer's drivers, support pages and more. Searchable
by device or manufacturer name.
WinDrivers Now a pay
site: No thanks!
Windrivers charges money now: you must be a subscriber to locate drivers
through their site. No great loss, just use the Hardware
Companies list (above) to locate your manufacturer's web site and
then go to their support/downloads pages.
update 01/19/02: I've noticed that the version
of fdisk that I've been using now has a "remove non dos partition"
option. If you have that option, you might not need delpart.
And someone wrote me and complained about the (in)accuracy of my wording
so I've rewritten the warning below.
*WARNING: Delpart removes partition
entries from the Master Boot Record (MBR) effectively making it appear
as if you have removed the data contained within the partitions you select.
Use with caution and make sure you back-up all data you want to save prior
to using it.
*NOTE: your drive will still contain the data, the MBR will have to be
rewritten in order to access it.
Download
Delpart.exe (123kB) Another warning: I've heard that there is a delpart that contains
a trojan, but it's like 700+ kB in size. Just avoid that one, or get delpart
directly
from Microsoft's reskit.
local download (Tweakcentral.com) - down for good. Jesus tap-dancin'
Christ guys, you can't type 7 letters into Google,
but you can write me an email bitching about my link being down?
MTUSpeed (Mike Sutherland)
If you use Windows9x, you should look into optimizing your MTU settings. AXCEL216 has
extensive information about MTU settings.
Powertoys
RegClean
4.1a (Microsoft)
RegClean supposedly removes some erroneous entries in the Regsitry. Use
with caution! *NOTE: There have been issues with
different versions of RegClean - I think this is the/a good version
XSetup (X-Teq)
A great little program. If there's a Windows setting that CAN be changed,
XSetup can change it.
I personally use XSetup to handle little things like removing the recycle-bin
from the desktop.
Other software:
CDCopy
The best program I've been able to find for DAE (Digital Audio Extraction)
- converting songs from music cd's to .WAV (or .mp3) file format.
CoolEdit Pro/2000 (Syntrillium)
CoolEdit is software that lets you edit sound files (ie WAV's). It is
very powerful software for sound editing.
NERO 5 (Ahead software)
Nero is CD-burning (recording/writing) software. I used Gear
for 3-years but I couldn't get Gear to work with my new burner so I tried
NERO. I like it so far.
SnagIt (techsmith.com)
SnagIt is a program that allows you to do screen-captures. It does much
more than the ole' PrintScrn button: it gives you options on what to capture,
where to send the output and the format of the image saved.
WS-FTP Pro (IP-Switch)
WSFTP is a graphical FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program. Another popular
ftp program is CuteFTP.
WinZip
There are many unzip (decompression) utilities available. I happen to
use WinZip.
Another good program is WinRAR (RarSoft)
since WinZip doesn't support .RAR archives for some reason
SoftLib
(Microsoft SoftLib collection) A very large list of Microsoft files. The descriptions are pretty
scant, but if you know the filename that you need, it might be here.
Great
places to get files
General file sites: (mainly shareware and
freeware) BetaNews
The latest software - as soon as it's available. With the quality
of released software these days, is there really a distinction between
released software and beta-software?
Download.com (CNet)
I swear they have all the good domain-names
FilePlanet (GameSpy
Network)
These guys drive me nuts with their constant taunting of how much better
their pay service is than their free service, but whatever...
Softseek
A large repository of shareware and freeware.
Voodoofiles
They say, "all games, tweaks and screensavers," but there's
a whole lot more than that!
WinDrivers
Now a pay service. (Was) One of the best ways to track down device drivers.
It allows you to search by device or manufacturer and then gives you a
link directly to the manufacturer's drivers page. Not any more: Try the Hardware
Companies Web List instead!
